Hello! My name is Ozzy (not to be confused with Ozzy Osbourne!) and I was just born. In appearance, it seems that I am a book of fairy tales, a package of delicate soufflé, coffee beans, a record player, a fitness bracelet, eye patches and a dinosaur. Everything is correct, but I’m also the package! My most cherished dream is to collect all my parts, because this is the only way I can get to my future home.

Stage I. Goods arrive at the logistics center, where they are assembled into an order.

Usually no one remembers their birthday, but not me. At first I wasn’t there, and then bam: a soufflé, a book, a fitness bracelet, a record player, coffee, eye patches and a toy dinosaur were collected in a basket on the website to become me – the package.

My parcel mates and I agreed to meet in the sorter’s blue basket when he started collecting us at the logistics center. We are lucky: we will all travel in one parcel box, but it also happens differently.

Sometimes parcels for one order are generated at different warehouses. Depends on what warehouse the goods are stored in. After all, it is almost impossible to collect more than ten million goods in one place - well, unless you rent a small city for this! For example, you can order a kettle and an air mattress. The kettle will come from Tver, and the mattress from the Moscow region. In this case, you will receive two different parcel boxes. Everything in order to deliver the order as quickly as possible, albeit in parts. There are two deliveries, but one order - that is, you pay once. Of course, unless you decide that you definitely need a tender soufflé and coffee beans for breakfast, and the rest later.

It all starts with the fact that all the goods are brought to the logistics center. Here they are accepted, marked in a special way - so as not to lose either the soufflé or the dinosaur on tens of thousands of square meters, then the order pickers begin to lay them out in the required sections and shelves. It is there that goods wait for their finest hour. More precisely, the moment when someone adds them to the cart on the Ozon website or application and orders.

At least seven people and two smart machines with complex IT under the hood are involved in the formation of an order, from assembly to delivery (for their uninterrupted operation, an entire IT System for managing warehouse inventory and warehouse logistics has been developed). Among the people - goods receiver, picker, consolidator, sorter, packer, storekeeper and loader. Machines include a super sorter and automatic packaging. The picker puts items on shelves when they arrive at the warehouse, and the consolidator uses a smart system to assign to the sorter which items for which orders need to be collected in one section. You may ask, where are the robots after all? Of course, the process is automated (read below about smart systems). But Ozon has 24 product categories, and it sells everything from pencils to cabinets. But robots that can handle both small wooden spoons and a 70-inch TV have not yet been invented. Therefore, for now people are taking the rap for them.

The logistics center is really just huge: its area is 24 hectares, it’s like a small urban village somewhere in the Moscow region, only if it also had four floors (don’t even try to imagine). Such an anthill where everyone is constantly busy with something and moves at lightning speed. Moreover, the center operates without holidays or weekends. All to ensure that everyone receives their parcels as quickly as possible.

Finally, the sorter collected us with the guys (let me remind you, this is a book of fairy tales, a soufflé, coffee beans, a record player, a fitness bracelet, eye patches and a dinosaur) in a blue basket and took us to a large cabinet with compartments.

Each sorter is responsible for specific sections of the logistics factory. The area of responsibility may change; it is determined by the smart Ozon system. The sorter has several orders (on average per shift—superheroes would be jealous—he collects 3,836 items). The program tells him to take, for example, a smartphone, an iron, a notepad and sneakers. He puts them in a blue basket, in which they will then travel along a smart tape to packaging. There they are met by another sorter who puts the goods into cells (one cell - one order). The packer takes them from there. This is how the package is formed!

Stage II. The goods fall into the hands of the packers

We fell into the hands of a packer. She began to quickly, quickly collect the box and put us there. Whack-whack, whack-whack, a little tape, turned it over, labeled it, turned it over again. And now I’m a real package, and I’m riding along the conveyor belt. Some kind of holiday, like New Year. You wait, wait for it, get ready, then two or three minutes (yes, no more!) and that’s it - a new life!

Packers see “hints” on the screen: a smart program tells them what size and shape packaging is best to take for a specific order, depending on the number of goods in the order and their size.

I was in a great mood. And nothing separated me from my cherished goal of becoming a mega parcel - a super sorter.

Stage III. Parcels undergo final measurements and turn into a mega parcel

The super sorter was nobly called Vanderland (that red one, in the GIF just below). It really was like something out of wonderland, almost like the Hogwarts sorting hat. In a couple of seconds, he accurately determined the weight of the parcels, understood which city each one should go to, and sent it to the necessary storekeepers and packers. It can process as many as 100,000 parcels per day!

– Just not to Siberia, please! It's so cold there! – I whispered in hope, driving inside the mighty distributor.

- So, eight kilos, what’s with the markings, let me see... to Moscow!

Phew, it's gone. Not the south, of course, but not bad either.

The distributor, or Vanderland, as its employees affectionately call it, is a machine that determines the dimensions and reads the markings of parcels, and then decides which sorting center and city they will go to. Parcels travel along a belt, magnets knock them into special compartments depending on the city of delivery. Parcels on pallets are formed into a “mega-parcel” - order boxes are secured together and loaded into a truck in this form.

I'll tell you this: high technology is power and strength. Well, what kind of person will understand on which pallets you need to add parcels, and where to subtract them? Yes, his head will boil and break! But Vanderland understands (and remembers!) what parcels each storekeeper has and can give him more orders if suddenly there is space left on the pallet in the “mega parcel”.

Stage IV. Mega parcels are sent to the delivery service

All parcels are assembled. The storekeeper began to fold us, so skillfully that I was stunned. He didn’t leave a single millimeter idle. This is how mega-parcels are “built”! While we were being put in our places, I thought that just recently I was alone, but now I’m surrounded by like-minded people. No, the box with the TV is not my family, but we have the same goal - to please the recipient.

We waited until everyone had settled down, then the loader waved to us and closed the doors of the truck. Finally we go to the sorting center. A little more and I will find myself where I am truly loved and waited for!

Stage V. Parcels from sorting centers are delivered to recipients

My home is in Moscow. First, I was brought along with other parcels to the capital’s sorting center. If a parcel is waiting to travel across Russia, say, to harsh Chelyabinsk, then first it goes to a regional logistics center and from there my fellow travelers will either be taken to pick-up points and parcel terminals, or will be personally picked up by a courier, like me. Each courier has his own route sheet, which clearly states in which area the parcel is expected. So in vain I was worried that we would get lost!

While I was dreaming, the courier was already pressing the bell as hard as he could. A handsome man opened the door and a boy looked out from behind his legs.
